The traditional market in Stokesley, on the Plain.

The market has a long history, although little is known before the 17th Century.

"I remember Stokesley Scene when it came out, and bought a copy of the anniversary edition for my mother, who is now retired, and living in Altea in Spain. She was delighted to get a copy and remember the faces of a few people she knew" Sharon Armstrong

Thanks for a very enjoyable read. Your book filled a gap in the 20th century history of Stokesley while most of our local books go further back. Lots of interesting local people too.Yours Sincerely,   Estelle Scott.

Publication excellent looking forward to 40 years. If you are looking for contributions I am born and bred 'Stowsla'.  Tim Allison.

"It is great to see a compilation of the Stokesley Scene out. People don't write that sort of magazine any more" George Marshfield

Think the book is fantastic.  Never told you at the time, but really admired you three for publishing the Stokesley Scene - very pro-active community minded!  Well done!   Bridget Wrightson

Luckily, Stokesley has a long long history and quite a lot of it has been well documented already, but I am glad your group is recording the 'modern' happenings. With t'interweb and TV, there is so much world news [future history] available immediately and I fear forgotten just as quickly that without books like yours, we could lose the local occasions and personalities so so easily. Well done to the Stokesley scene gang - Tim Allison

The Stokesley Scene Collection is available in Stokesley at The Yorkshire Store, Style, The Stokesley Gallery, Joe Cornish Gallery and Chapters Hotel. Outside of the town it can be purchased from Borders (Teesside Park), Waterstones (Middlesbrough) and Hutton Rudby Post Office.

From Stokesley School magazine

January 2009

Thirty years ago three teenage boys who were attending Stokesley Comprehensive
School and a fourth boy who was privately educated took it upon themselves to write
a magazine for the people of Stokesley. The magazine was written over a two year
period from 1978 to 1980 with a further edition being written in 1985 by a group of
A level students from this School.

Thirty years on Eric Sandelands, Peter Hallworth, Andrew Grass and Toby Brehm the
four founders of the magazine have now published theirs and others work in a 30th
Anniversary Limited Edition book entitled 'The Stokesley Scene Collection', Life in
a Yorkshire Market Town with a Foreword by the Rt.Hon.William Hague MP.

The book includes a feature celebrating the 50th anniversary of the school, which
was launched at this years Stokesley Show with Stokesley School as part of the
celebrations. A donation will be made to School funds for each copy sold through the
School.

A Curioss Story

He wrote:

Im writing from France where i live now after leaving Stokesley in the
late 80s. Tonight i have been scanning the net looking for a new chainsaw (
as we have had major storms here) when i just typed in Stokesley in to see
what came up. After looking through i saw the 1957 football team which made me think as my old man used to play for them and always told me that they
were a great side. As i clicked on i was suprised to see my dad in the back
row

Brian Brunskill.

We replied:

Great to here from you from France. I remember your dad Brian and yes they
were a great side my dad talked fondly of the 1957 and 1958 Jefferson Cup
winners sides. I am pleased that seeing the photo has made your weekend as
you say you are having storms.

You will be pleased to know Rob that these two photographs of the 1957 & 58
sides appear in our new book 'The Stokesley Scene Collection' which we
launched at last years Stokesley show with the help of William Hague MP who
wrote the foreword for the book. If you would like more information you can
